Dr. Shyam B. Bansal serves as the Director of the Medanta Institute of Nephrology and Kidney Transplant. He received his Nephrology training at SGPGIMS Lucknow, renowned as one of India's premier institutes in this specialty. In 2006, Dr. Bansal founded the Department of Nephrology at Medical College Gwalior. He later worked as a consultant at Fortis Hospital in Noida before joining the Nephrology Department at Medanta Hospital, Gurugram, at its establishment in 2009. His efforts have been pivotal in positioning this department as a leading center for Nephrology and Kidney Transplantation in India. Additionally, he coordinates the DNB teaching program in Nephrology and plays an active role in mentoring emerging nephrologists. To date, Dr. Bansal has cared for over 2,000 kidney transplant recipients. He is also a dedicated researcher, having authored more than 50 original articles and numerous book chapters in the fields of Nephrology and kidney transplantation. His significant research contributions include the first report of kidney transplantation in an HIV-positive patient in India, the initial report and subsequent series of ABO-incompatible kidney transplants in the country, and the first report of steroid-free kidney transplantation in India, among others. Recently, he served as a guest editor for a publication on Transplant Infectious Disease guidelines for South Asia in the Indian Journal of Transplantation.
